From 1965-2004 John Curran performed with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1970-1980 was Principal Flutist with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. Presently he is principal flutist with with the Narragansett Bay Symphony and the Ocean State Summer Pops Orchestra.
He has a BA in Chemistry from the University of Rhode Island, with minors in Mathematics, Physics and Music, and from 1969-1995 did research for several companies in New England.
His flute studies were with James Pappoutsakis at the New England Conservatory, followed by advanced studies with Julius Baker and Robert Stallman in New York, and with Marianne Gedigian in Boston. From 1994-2009 Mr. Curran taught flute and chamber music at Brown University and at the Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, as well as in his private studio. He also coached the woodwinds of the RI Philharmonic Youth Orchestras and the Brown University Orchestra.
He is a Visiting Professor of Music in Performance at Wheaton College.
In 1998 he was invited to teach masterclasses at the State Conservatory (now part of the Saltsburg Mozarteum) in Feldkirch Austria, and has also taught masterclasses at Brown University. He performed recitals in Austria in 1998, in Germany in 2001, and presents an annual recital in Providence.
In 2006, he was asked by the Governor of Rhode Island to perform as flute soloist for the September 11 Memorial ceremonies at the Rhode Island State House.
Mr. Curran plays a 14k gold Sankyo flute that was made for Julius Baker in 1978 and purchased from Mr. Baker in 1980.
